Session 1 Curriculum
- To introduce students to the stories and lessons of the Torah
- To offer students opportunities to rehearse the actual celebrations of Jewish holidays.
- To teach fluency in Hebrew reading
- Hebrew Bible: In third grade, learners delve into the world of Torah as they explore the Jewish values embedded in our history and tradition. Third graders start with the story of Adam and Eve and journey through the Five Books of Moses learning stories like the Exodus, the Holiness Code, the Spies and Mah Tovu all the way to the Death of Moses. Learners take with them the lessons these stories teach us and how to make them relevant in their daily lives.
- Jewish Holidays: In third grade, students don't just learn about the Jewish holidays, they celebrate and rehearse the observation of the holidays. This is an active, experiential approach to Jewish holidays that fuses actual celebrations with role play, cooking, eating, shaking, sounding, and many other activities.
Session 2 Curriculum
We know – and celebrate – that there are many different ways to connect to Judaism and Jewish life. Through our tracks, Students are able to engage with Jewish learning in a very hands-on way and learn additional skills through the arts.
Omanut (Art Track) | Teva (Nature Track) |
---|---|
Omanut (oh-mah-noot) is our art program in which students get to explore the topics of Torah, Israel and holidays through the lens and modality of art. In Omanut students will have the opportunity to spend time immersed in Jewish art, deepen their artistic skills and spirituality, learn about many of the great Jewish artists and Jewish art-forms, and create your own works of art based on Jewish topics. For example, students in Omanut have studied the important Jews in history, and then created portraits in the style of Israeli artist Hanoch Piven. Please note that while tuition for Omanut is the same as for all other 3rd-5th grade programs, there is an additional Supply Fee. |
Teva is our nature program, in which students will get to explore God, Torah, and Israel through the lens of nature and the outdoors. This program includes opportunities for outdoor learning around the DJCC, Bull Creek, and beyond as we celebrate and learn about seasonal, eco, and wilderness-based traditions of the Jewish people. For example, we might have discussions around a fire in an outdoor classroom/ “campground” on the campus, take a short hike in order to connect with the experience of Moses climbing Mt. Sinai to get the 10 commandments, or participate in a vegetable garden project connecting with Israel and the holidays. Join us in Teva, where we will make connections between Jewish life and the natural world! |
