Cantor Abby Gostein

Cantor Abby Gostein

Cantor Abby Gostein has served Temple Beth Shalom since January 2004. Her life has been devoted to Jewish education and spiritual growth through Jewish music since her teen years. She has served Reform congregations since the early '90s and has taught Jewish music to religious school children since the late '80s. Cantor Gostein comes from a background in song leading and loves to build a "singing congregation" and spread the love of Jewish music.

A renowned, award-winning published composer of Jewish liturgical music (Transcontinental Music Publications), her compositions have been sung throughout the United States as well as internationally. Many of her pieces have been selected for presentation at Jewish liturgical music festivals and at cantorial professional conferences. She has produced a CD of her original compositions, entitled "Each Blessing," as well as a congregational CD featuring our Temple Beth Shalom Kol Hakavod Ensemble entitled "Kol Hakavod." You can listen to her music on our website.

Cantor Gostein is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and also the Guild of Temple Musicians (GTM), for which she served in the past as vice president of membership. She served for many years as a GTM delegate to the Union for Reform Judaism's Joint Commission on Worship, Music and Religious Living. She is also a board member for the Women Cantors' Network, an organization for which she has co-chaired two national conferences and served on the Music Commission Committee.

Cantor Gostein received her ordination and Masters in Jewish Sacred Music from The Academy for Jewish Religion, California. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Yale University and a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Texas at Austin.
