Aliyah – Being called to the Torah

The custom of the Reform movement is to call people to the Torah by their father and mother’s name (i.e., “Yitzchak ben Avraham v’Sara”). If you need help determining a Hebrew name, please consult the Rabbi.

Procedures:

  • Come up to the Torah when your name is called (in Hebrew) by the Cantor/Cantorial Soloist
  • Stand next to the Torah reader’s right hand
  • The Reader will open the Torah and point to the first word of the aliyah to be read. If you are wearing a tallit, you may touch a fringe to the margin nearest the word and then kiss the fringe. If you are not wearing a tallit, you may use the fringes of the Torah reader’s Tallit.

Then recite the following:

The person who is called to the Torah (Oleh/Olah) says:

Noname-01

Bar'chu et Adonai ham’vorach

Bless Adonai who is blessed

Congregation responds:

Noname-02

Baruch Adonai ham’vorach l’olam va-ed

Blessed is Adonai who is blessed now and forever.

The Oleh/Olah then says:

Noname-03

Baruch Adonai ham’vorach l’olam va-ed.
Baruch atah, Adonai
Eloheinu, Melech haolam,
asher bachar banu mikol haamim,
v’natan lanu et Torato.
Baruch atah, Adonai, notein haTorah

Blessed is Adonai who is blessed now and forever.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has chosen us from
among the peoples, and given us the Torah. Blessed are You, Adonai, who gives the Torah.

The Reader will chant the text from the Torah scroll. Once the Reader has finished, the Reader will point to the last word. You may again you may touch a fringe to the margin nearest the word and then kiss the fringe. Then, recite:

Blessing after reading Torah

When the reading concludes, the Oleh/Olah says:

Noname-04

Baruch atah, Adonai
Eloheinu, Melech haolam,
asher natan lanu Torat emet,
v’chayei olam nata b’tocheinu.
Baruch atah, Adonai, notein haTorah

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe,
who has given us a Torah of truth, implanting within us eternal life.
Blessed are You, Adonai, who gives the Torah.

When you have completed the blessing, step to the left side of the Reader and wait while the next aliyah is blessed and read. When the person(s) being called to the Torah after you has/have completed the aliyah, they will take your place on the left side of the Reader, and you should return to your seat.
