Want to learn to build an app or video game and "repair the world" through computer science? This is the club for you!

What is Girls Who Code? Girls Who Code is a national non-profit program that helps to close the gender gap in technology. Their after-school clubs are for 6th-12th grade girls to use computer science to impact their community and join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models.

How do I learn more? There is an information session on January 22nd, 2017 from 11:00 to 11:30am at Temple Beth Shalom in Room 204 on the Second Floor. This session will provide information about the Club and is open to both girls and their families.

How much is it? The Club itself is FREE, including instructional materials. However, there is an $18.00 fee per semester to cover dinner costs.

Where is it? The club will be held in Room 304 (on the Third Floor) at Temple Beth Shalom.

When is it? The club will meet on Tuesdays (except during holidays and school breaks) from 5:30pm to 7:30pm starting January 24th

Who can join? The club is for girls in grades 6 through 12 and is open to the entire Austin-area Jewish Community. We use an inclusive definition of “girl” and we welcome trans girls, genderqueer girls, and non-binary people who are significantly girl-identified.

Do I need to bring my own laptop? We recommend girls bring their own laptops or chromebooks (no tablets), that way they can keep learning and practicing at home! However, if a family doesn't have a computer to spare, Temple Beth Shalom has a few Chromebooks we can lend students while they're attending the club.

What will we learn? The Girls Who Code curriculum is designed for students with a wide range of computer science experience. We will have activities for girls with ZERO computer science experience all the way up to activities that introduce college-level concepts. The curriculum will be infused with Jewish wisdom and practice, and will provide resources for the girls as they explore an array of topics relevant to their lives as young Jewish women. The broad set of soft and hard skills we will teach are: Teamwork, Confidence, Time Management, Communication, and the Core4 Computer science concepts (functions, variables, conditionals, loops). These Core4 concepts form the basis of all computer programming languages, whether you want to build a mobile app, a website, or program a robot.

What will we make or do? What Jewish Club would be complete without a healthy dose of tikkun olam? As a central part of the Club experience, girls will work with the club on a Computer Science Impact Project, where they'll use computer science to solve a problem relevant to our Club and community. Other Girls Who Code clubs have made some pretty cool stuff! You should check their projects out!
