We are very pleased "Mitzvah on Wheels" is on the move, a project to eliminate transportation barriers preventing some members of our congregation from fully participating in Temple life.
The effort began when we realized there were people who weren't attending services, adult education, and other events due to a need for transportation. While some members with transportation needs are receiving rides from friends and relatives, there are others who don't have the option to travel with someone they know. Some of those who need rides are older members of our Temple and others are working-age members who have various disabilities or other reasons they cannot drive.
When a call comes into the Temple, volunteers are called and send out a "zip code blast" to anyone living in the zip code of the person(s) requesting a ride, or to members who live further from Temple and driving past the requester’s zip code. When someone volunteers, the coordinators then send the volunteer driver the name and phone number of the person making the request to arrange transportation times and share the address.
To request a ride, please call the main Temple Office at 512-735-8900. We request a few days' notice. We have been pleased to be able to arrange volunteer rides for most all of the requests.
